Dharamshala was formerly called Bhagsu. Before the arrival of the British, the city and the surrounding areas were ruled by the Kangra kings of the Katoch dynasty. The dynasty is counted amongst the oldest serving royal families in the world. A property owned by them still exists in the city and is called “Clouds End Villa”. The British annexed Dharamshala in 1848. They built a cantonment area for their troops and built houses for themselves in the neighbourhoods of the cantonment.
